The history of village signs, at least decorative ones, really began in 1912 when King Edward VII commissioned four signs to be erected in villages on the Sandringham estate. Since then such signs have appeared all over the country, usually to mark the centre of a village, and depicting its history and culture.
Much can be learned about a community by studying these signs, and those of you wishing to erect a new sign can take ideas from the past. For example local landmarks, trades, historical events, famous cousins can all be included into the design.
